Tatton Liberal Democrats

Liberal Democrats - Freedom of the individual underpinned by a safety net for the vulnerable

Welcome to Tatton Liberal Democrats

Nick Clegg
The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives.

Our intention is that this website will be a useful resource for local people to find out more about the local Liberal Democrats and the campaigns we are running.

Protecting Civil Liberties

Liberal Democrats have the protection of civil liberties at the heart of our purpose and philosophy. The body of rights and freedoms, which make up our conception of civil liberties are, we believe, fundamental to building the free, fair and open society to which our constitution commits the party. There is no other issues concerning political values and public policy where the lines can be more clearly drawn between Liberal Democrats and our political opponents.

Constitutional Reform

Democracy is the guarantee of all our freedoms, but the state of British democracy still leaves much to be desired. Liberal Democrats want to make government the true servant of the people and we will develop a political process in which all voices can be heard. Currently voters do not have a strong enough voice or enough choice. No wonder that more and more people feel alienated from politics.

Strong Local Government

The UK is the most centralised country in the western world. Local government in England has been forced into a straightjacket by central government. A vast array of Whitehall regulations, targets, inspections, controls and restrictions have effectively turned local authorities, of whatever political colour, into agents of central government, following a centralised agenda. In addition, local government is hamstrung by a financial system that means councils are dependent on central government for three quarters of the money they receive. Much of the rest of their income comes from Council Tax, a system that is inherently unfair and inflexible.
