Manchester Airport Relief Road
When is the extension to the Manchester Airport Link Road between Handforth and the airport going to be completed? Residents are becoming increasingly concerned that despite the announcement in November 2008 by the then Minister of Transport of £165m of funding there still seems to be no action to have the road completed. The completion of the relief road would do more to remove unnecessary traffic from Wilmslow, Handforth and Styal then any other single initiative and local Liberal Democrats are anxious that there is visible progress soon and a clear completion date.
Wilmslow Town Council
Following a successful exercise to obtain the necessary signatures to a petition for a Town Council in Wilmslow a Town Council has been formed. The Liberal Democrats in Wilmslow support of the Town Council as a necessary piece of local democracy and will lobby the Town Council to take action on behalf of Wilmslow residents. The Council has a budget of £200,000 and meets on the third Monday of each month at the Oakenclough Children's Centre. All meetings are open to the public, and the next meeting will be at 7.30pm on Monday 18th July. If you have any issues you would like the Liberal Democrats to raise with the Town Council please email enq@tattonlibdems.org.
Town Centre Car Parking
Following years of complaints by residents throughout the town and an extensive consultation exercise new parking restrictions in the town centre and surrounding residential streets have been introduce in an attempt to control the all day parking that has been such a concern for many people. The new restrictions include new yellow lines, new parking bays and new or amended time restrictions. These new arrangements are to be welcomed but need to be monitored to ensure that they are achieving the desired results. Some fine tuning may be required. Local Liberal Democrats would however like to see further action to improve transport around the town including additional long term parking facilities, improved public transport (particularly on East/West routes) and further cycle paths such as that being considered for The Carrs.
Altrincham Road
The apparently increasing level of accidents on Altringham Road (A538) on the Western approaches to the town has been causing increasing concern. This is an issue local Liberal Democrats have been raising for a long time and it is pleasing that the promised speed review of this road has now taken place. The speed limit is in the process of being changed. This is a welcome development although additional measures will be required to bring about substantial speed reductions (the major cause of accidents on the stretch of road) and improve safety.
The Carrs
This much loved open space in the town has suffered some neglect in recent years but matters now seem to be improving. Thanks to the combined efforts of East Cheshire Council and The Friends of The Carrs. Additional seating has been provided throughout this open space and new picnic tables and BBQ stands provided. Limited car parking restrictions with a nominal charge have been introduced so that the users of The Carrs can find space in the car park and not be crowded out by unauthorised long term parking and consideration is being given to a multiuse path linking the path from Styal via Worms Hill with the town centre. New notice boards have also been erected and plans are being developed for a new natural play area near the picnic area. Erosion of the river bank still remains a problem. However the Friends Group obtained some grant funding for action to improve the wildlife on The Carrsand steps to tackle this serious problem have been taken.
