Liberal Democrats choose candidate for Tatton
Local Liberal Democrats have selected David Lomax to fight the Tatton seat for them in the forth-coming General Election. The 54 year old, is a special needs teacher at New Mills School. He is married to Hilary and has 2 step children and 2 grand children.
Commenting after his selection, David Lomax said, “I am delighted to have been selected to fight this seat. Tatton may be classed as the most affluent constituency in the North West but there are some real contrasts in the area. The recession has hit many people hard in Tatton. Try telling the shopkeeper who has been forced to close, the business that has been unable to get extra funding from the bank, the pensioner who has seen savings under attack, those that have been made unemployed at the airport or are now facing uncertainty at AstraZenica, or the farmer who has been forced to sell the pedigree dairy herd that they are so well off.”
“I am delighted that Nick Clegg has put fairness at the heart of the Liberal Democrats manifesto for the General Election. We need to give our young people a fair start in life; promote a fair, green economy with life long training opportunities to meet the rapidly changing needs of the 21st Century; fair taxation nationally and locally; a fair provision health services and care for a growing elderly population. Above all we want a fair, clean political system that engages with and really represents the community.”

To most people Tatton is probably known best as the home of Neil Hamilton the former MP who was embroiled in the sleaze scandal of the mid 1990s. In 1997 he was triumphantly beaten by the former BBC Correspondent,
Martin Bell who was given a free run in the election when both Labour and Liberal Democrat candidates stood down in his favour.
At the General Election in 2005 we increased our vote by 17% and only narrowly missed out on pushing Labour into third place. We are working hard to achieve a better result at the next election and have recently completed a Constituency Development Plan, which aims ultimately to put us in a position where we will be represented by a LibDem MP.
Geography and background
The main centres of population in the Tatton Constituency are Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Knutsford and part of Northwich with large rural areas between the towns.
Local Government
In December 2007 a major local government reorganisation affecting the Tatton Constituency was approved by government and subsequently confirmed by Parliament in March 2008. The number of councils in Cheshire is to be reduced from seven to two - Cheshire West and Cheshire East. Elections for the two councils were held in May 2008 and shadow councils formed. Full powers will be vested in the two councils on 1 April 2009. About two thirds of Tatton Constituency will lie in the Cheshire East Council area including Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Knutsford. The areas of Lach Dennis, Peover, Broken Cross, Comberbach and Autobus will be under the authority of Cheshire West.
Tatton Liberal Democrats
Wilmslow has the greatest concentration of members and supporters and is the main strength of the constituency. We also have a number of members in Alderley Edge where we contested the Macclesfield Borough Council seat in 2006, polling 45% of the vote. There is a branch in Knutsford where we are represented by two Councillors on the Town Council. The local party is financially sound with an active social programme and good fund raising arrangements. Membership has been consistent at around the 150 mark but is beginning to grow gradually. The Tatton Constituency is seen as being fertile Liberal Democrat territory and local members are working hard at all levels in order to promote a fairer deal for all members of the local community.
