Liberal Democrats - Freedom of the individual underpinned by a safety net for the vulnerable

Guest Speaker at the recent Lib Dem Spring Conference in Harrogate was Howard Dean who was Chairman of the Democratic National Committee during President Obama's election campaign. He told delegates about a new style of campaigning - reaching out through the internet and holding house meetings. He spoke of the new President's hopes for change in both domestic and foreign policy. The keynote speeches by Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg, Vince Cable, Shadow Chancellor and Simon Hughes Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary encompassed Lib Dem policies for the immediate and long term future. Nick said 'There are some moments in history when the unthinkable happens - when more is destroyed than ever seemed imaginable, natural disasters, war, economic collapse. But if you look back through the long lens of history, what you see is that some brave pioneering men and women managed to look beyond the pain and began to realise it was an opportunity for making real changes - as happened after World War 2. In Europe new allegiances were formed between old enemies and in this country there were great reforms in education and the provision of health care for all.'
